Depth of shade (DOS) is a value expressing the lightness or darkness of color on fiber as a percentage of the weight of the dye to the weight of goods (WOG) — fleece, yarn or fabric. For example, a DOS of 1% is 1 gram of dye for every 100 grams of fiber and a DOS of 2% is 2 grams of dye for every 100 grams of fiber.
Use this page to calculate how much dye stock solution you need to add to your dye bath to get the desired depth of shade. Enter the weight of your fiber and the depth of shade. Enter the color formula either by entering the names of the color components or by selecting the component dyes. You may enter the formula as parts or percentages. Select the strength of the dye stock solution for each color component. Click on the Submit button to display the amount of dye stock solution you need to add to your dye bath.
If you are dyeing very pale shades or small samples, you may need to dilute your dye stock solutions so that you can measure the dye accurately. Use Acid Bath Solution (ABS) instead of water to make your dilutions.
The volume of dye solution needed to reach the desired depth of shade is calculated using the following equation:
VOL = WOG × DOS ÷ DSS
